Are your windows getting drafty? Are your doors creaking? It might be time for a replacement. High-quality windows and doors can help increase energy efficiency, boost curb appeal, and add protection to your home. But, where do you start?

One of the first steps that you’ll want to accomplish is measuring the window or door that you want replaced. That way, you’ll know exactly what size you’re looking for when you start to shop for your replacement.

When you decide to call NEXT Door & Window,  we’ll bring the showroom to you and properly measure your windows and doors. This is included in your complimentary appointment. However, if you decide to do it yourself, you may find the following tips helpful for getting an accurate measurement.

How to Measure Windows For Replacement

Measuring Awning or Casement Windows

casement window measurements

If you’re measuring an awning or casement window, there are three steps that you must follow.

  1. Measure the width of your casement or awning window at the center. Pull your tape measure horizontally from one side of the trim to the other.
  2. Measure the height of your awning or casement window. Pull your tape measure vertically from one side of the trim to the other.
  3. Double-check all of your measurements and ensure that you determine both the width and height measurements of your awning or casement window.

Measuring Double-Hung, Single-Hung, and Sliding Windows

Double-Hung Window Measurements

When you’re measuring a double-hung, single-hung, or sliding window, the steps will be slightly different, depending on which window you choose.

  1. Measure the width of your single-hung or double-hung window from one side of the trim to the trim in the middle. On a sliding window, measure from trim to trim in the center.
  2. Measure the height of your single-hung or double-hung window. On a sliding window, the height will be measured in the middle. Pull your tape measure vertically from one side of the trim to the other.
  3. Double-check all of your measurements to ensure that you’ve correctly determined both the width and height measurements of your single-hung window, double-hung window, or sliding window.

Measuring Bay or Bow Windows

Bay Window Measurements

To measure a bay window or bow window, perform the following three steps.

  1. Measure the width of each window panel in the bow or bay window at the center. Note the width of the center window separately, as it will most likely differ from the others. Pull your tape measure horizontally from trim to trim or jamb to jamb.
  2. Measure the height of your bow or bay window in the center. Pull your tape measure vertically from one side of the trim to the other.
  3. Double-check all of your measurements to guarantee that you’ve determined the width and height measurements of your bow or bay window.

How to Measure For Replacement Doors

Door Measurements

Measuring for replacement doors is fairly similar to measuring for replacement windows.

  1. While on the inside of your home, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the inner edge of one of the side jambs to the other.
  2. From the inside of your home, measure the distance between the threshold and the head jamb with a tape measure.
  3. Double-check your measurements to ensure that you’ve accurately determined the height and width measurements of your door.

How to Measure For French Door Replacements

French Door Measurements

Like with most doors, French doors will need to be measured from the inside of your home. There are a couple of extra steps for measuring these doors.

  1. Measure the width of the top of the frame, the bottom of the frame, and then the middle of the door.
  2. Measure the height at the left side of the door, the right side, and then the middle.
  3. Measure the jamb width from the back of the exterior trim to the back of the interior trim.
  4. Round up the width and height measurements to the largest measurement as long as there is only a small variance between them.
