Although wood entry doors can enhance your home’s elegance and timeless appearance, they demand more attention than other materials like fiberglass or steel. There are several reasons why you may not want a wood entry door:

  1. Wood doors can be expensive compared to other materials like fiberglass or steel.
  2. They require regular maintenance, such as sanding and repainting, to keep them looking good and to prevent rotting or warping.
  3. Wood doors are less energy-efficient than other materials and may not be able to withstand extreme weather conditions as well.
  4. Wood doors are also more susceptible to damage from insects or other pests.

As a window and door company, we cannot recommend wood entry doors for a home in Illinois. As mentioned above, wood doors can be incredibly high maintenance and less durable, and they don’t work well with our Illinois climate, where we experience heavy rain, snow, sleet, and high humidity.

We cannot deny their beauty and curb appeal; we know they are a great fit at times (for historical architecture). But a fiberglass door can also achieve the look and feel you’ve always imagined. Remember, fiberglass doors deliver a realistic representation of a wood door but are much easier to maintain and a better fit for our seasons.

Here are some examples of our ProVia fiberglass doors.

Consider some things if your heart is set on a wood door. If you live in a climate like Illinois, this front door material may be easier to maintain if you add a storm door or have a covered entryway. The wood door should also be kept from direct sunlight because it can quickly lose its looks without proper maintenance.

You also want to ensure you have a high enough porch so nothing puddles near your wood door. As you can see, the wood door is the most high-maintenance material before you even purchase it.

Consider a fiberglass or steel entry door if you prefer a more manageable but equally beautiful door. Fiberglass is a long-lasting door material that truly requires little work. Or, if you’re looking for durable doors that offer extra security and can withstand outdoor elements, consider a steel material.
